Today is National Happiness Day—a lovely reminder to pause and notice the moments that bring us joy. Not the big, life-changing events we often wait for, but the small, unexpected things that quietly brighten an ordinary day.
This morning started like any other. A quick trip to the Post Office, a simple errand, nothing particularly special. I collected my receipt, glanced down at it… and smiled.
At the top, instead of my name (which they didn’t know), someone had handwritten: “our lovely PPI lady.”
Such a small thing. A few words scribbled on a receipt. But in that moment, it completely lifted my mood.
It made me stop and think—how often do we underestimate the power of small kindnesses? A friendly comment, a bit of humour, a thoughtful gesture that takes seconds to do but can stay with someone all day.
We live in a world that moves quickly. We’re busy, distracted, often focused on the next thing. But happiness doesn’t always come from big milestones or major achievements. Sometimes, it’s found in the simplest interactions—a smile from a stranger, a kind word, or even a handwritten note on a piece of paper you almost threw away.
That little message reminded me how easy it is to make someone else’s day better. The person who wrote it probably didn’t think twice. They didn’t know they’d be part of someone’s National Happiness Day reflection. But they were.
And that’s the beauty of it.
Happiness doesn’t have to be complicated. It can be as simple as choosing to be kind, to add a personal touch, to make someone feel seen—even if you don’t know their name.
So today, I’m taking that moment as a reminder:
To notice the small things.
To appreciate the unexpected.
And maybe, to be that little bit of kindness for someone else too.
Because if a few handwritten words on a receipt can turn a normal day into a happy one… imagine what else we can do.
